New Matter-certified vacuums pair directly into the Home app as of iOS 18.4 – no third-party software, but also no mapping or keep-out zones inside Apple’s app. Everything else, including the picks below, needs Homebridge, a small always-on server that translates a vacuum’s own API into something HomeKit understands.

Neither path gets you full native HomeKit support in Apple’s strict sense – that would mean the vacuum itself speaks the HomeKit Accessory Protocol, and no consumer robot vacuum does. Matter and Homebridge are both bridges, just built by different people. More on how to set up Homebridge is below.

Matter vs. Homebridge vs. mapping: what actually reaches Apple Home

Robot vacuums joined the Matter spec with version 1.2 in late 2023, and Apple added Matter vacuum support to the Home app in iOS 18.4. That combination lets a compatible vacuum show up in Apple Home with no extra hardware beyond a Home hub (an Apple TV or HomePod). The catch that doesn’t show up in any spec sheet: Matter’s robot vacuum profile only covers starting, stopping, and switching cleaning modes. Room mapping, keep-out zones, and multi-floor plans stay locked inside the vacuum’s own app on both the Matter and Homebridge paths – Apple Home just doesn’t have a data model for a floor plan.

Note the gap: iRobot’s Combo J7 and J9 aren’t on the Matter-supported list as of this writing, even though other current Roomba models are – check iRobot’s own compatibility page before assuming a given SKU qualifies. All of them need iOS 18.4 or later and a Home hub – an Apple TV or HomePod – to appear in the Home app.

The tradeoff is the same one covered above: Matter gets you Siri commands and Home app automations for starting, stopping, and switching modes, not mapping or keep-out zones. For room-by-room control you’re still opening the vacuum’s own app either way, Matter or Homebridge.

Setting up Homebridge for a robot vacuum

Homebridge is the workaround for every robot vacuum that isn’t on the Matter list above – it runs as a small always-on server (a Raspberry Pi is the common choice) and translates the vacuum’s own cloud or local API into HomeKit accessories.
