Does Lutron Caseta Work With Homekit?

Yes, Lutron Caseta works with Apple HomeKit – but there is a hardware catch. You need a second-generation Smart Hub (model number contains a “2”). The original first-gen bridges do not support HomeKit. Both the standard Smart Hub Gen 2 (L-BDG2-WH) and the Smart Hub Pro Gen 2 (L-BDGPRO2-WH) work fine for HomeKit control. If you are buying new, get the Pro – it supports more third-party integrations and is worth the small price difference.

What You Need

The Smart Hub is the bridge between your Caseta devices and Apple Home. Without it, Caseta switches communicate over Lutron’s proprietary Clear Connect RF network but have no HomeKit endpoint to talk to.

What you actually need:

  • Lutron Caseta Smart Hub Gen 2 – standard model (L-BDG2-WH) or Pro model (L-BDGPRO2-WH). The model number must include a “2”. First-gen bridges will not work with HomeKit.
  • An iPhone, iPad, or Mac running a current iOS/macOS version
  • The free Lutron app (iOS/Android) – version 2.2 or later
  • For remote access when away from home: an Apple TV (3rd gen or later), HomePod, or iPad set up as a home hub

The Smart Hub connects to your router via ethernet (cable included). It does not run over Wi-Fi, which is actually one of the reasons the system is reliable.

The Pro model adds support for Alarm.com, certain audio/video systems, and third-party control systems. If you are doing a straightforward HomeKit setup with light switches and dimmers, the standard Gen 2 hub covers it. If you want broader smart home integration down the road, get the Pro.

Which Caseta Products Work with HomeKit

Once the Smart Hub Gen 2 is set up, these Caseta devices show up in Apple Home:

  • Diva Smart Dimmer – paddle-style, works with dimmable LEDs and incandescent/halogen
  • Diva Smart Dimmer ELV+ – for ELV-compatible LED drivers, available in six finishes
  • Original Push-Button Dimmer – the classic Caseta form factor
  • Claro Smart Switch – on/off paddle switch for non-dimmable loads and ceiling fans
  • Serena Smart Shades – roller, honeycomb, and wood blinds with tilt
  • Pico Smart Remote – battery-powered wireless remote, appears as a scene trigger in HomeKit

Pico remotes and the Smart Hub itself do not appear as controllable accessories in the Apple Home app – only the load controllers (dimmers, switches, fan controls, plugs) do.

How to Set Up Lutron Caseta with HomeKit

Connect the Smart Hub to your router

Plug the Smart Hub Gen 2 into your router using the included ethernet cable, then connect the power adapter. Wait for the status LED to turn solid green.

Set up the Lutron app

Download the free Lutron app on your iPhone or iPad. Open it and follow the prompts to create an account and add your Smart Hub. The app will walk you through adding each Caseta switch or dimmer.

Add your Caseta devices

In the Lutron app, tap Add Device and follow the pairing instructions for each switch or dimmer. Devices will be assigned to rooms – set these up accurately since they carry over to HomeKit.

Enable the HomeKit integration

In the Lutron app, go to Settings > Integrations > Apple HomeKit. Tap Set Up and scan the HomeKit code printed on the bottom of your Smart Hub. The Apple Home app will open and import all your Caseta devices.

Organize and automate in Apple Home

Your Caseta lights now appear in the Home app. Create automations, set scenes like Good Morning or Away, and control everything with Siri or your Apple Watch.

Why Caseta is One of the Better HomeKit Switch Options

Most smart switches run on Z-Wave or Zigbee and require their own dedicated hub, or they run on Wi-Fi and clog up your network with dozens of individual devices. Caseta does neither. It uses Lutron’s Clear Connect RF protocol – a proprietary radio standard built specifically for lighting control, operating on a 434 MHz frequency that avoids the crowded 2.4 GHz band where Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compete for space.

The practical result: the switches are fast, the connection is stable, and you are not troubleshooting dropped devices because your neighbor got a new router.

The other big thing: no neutral wire required. Most smart switches need a neutral wire to complete the circuit for the switch’s own power. A lot of older homes – anything built before the 1990s, and plenty built after – do not have neutrals in the switch box. Caseta dimmers work without one, which is why they are one of the few genuinely universal options for older homes.

The tradeoffs are real too. Caseta is a closed ecosystem – you need the Smart Hub, you are tied to Lutron’s app and infrastructure, and the switches have a specific look that does not suit every home. But for HomeKit users who want something that works reliably without babysitting, it is a strong choice.

Troubleshooting: Caseta Devices Not Responding in Apple Home

If your Caseta devices show “No Response” in the Home app, the problem is almost always the Smart Hub losing its network connection, not the switches themselves.

  • Check that the Smart Hub has a solid green LED. If it is amber or off, check the ethernet connection and restart your router.
  • Make sure your Smart Hub and your Apple home hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad) are on the same network – not one on 2.4 GHz and the other on 5 GHz if they are on separate SSIDs.
  • If devices still show as unresponsive after the hub is back online, open the Lutron app, go to Settings > Integrations > Apple HomeKit, and refresh the integration.
  • As a last resort, remove the HomeKit integration in the Lutron app and re-add it by scanning the HomeKit code on the hub’s base again.
